Über seine Errichtung gibt es nach der Volksüberlieferung verschiedene Ursachen:
1. Ein fahrender Zinngießer namens Keßler, der in Kerzenheim einige Taler verdient hatte, wurde hier erschlagen und beraubt.
2. Zwei Kesselschmiede gerieten hier in Streit und verletzten sich gegenseitig so schwer, dass sie beide starben. Fromme Leute errichteten zur Sühne dieser Bluttat das Kreuz. Früher soll darauf die Inschrift gestanden haben: "Hier erschlugen sich zwei Keßler".
3. Dort, wo heute das Kreuz steht, wurde vor langer Zeit ein Kesselflicker ermordet aufgefunden.
4. Ein Staufer Bürger namens Keßler hat das Kreuz errichtet.
5. Schließlich erzählt man sich in Stauf, daß fromme Leute zur Geisterstunde in der Walpurgisnacht an dem Kreuz den Chor der Rosenthaler Nonnen hören könnten. (Schnabel 1976)
