The "arcade" is originally regarded in our cultural sphere as a typical architectural element of the Renaissance and is more specifically an arch supported by pillars or columns. In a broader sense, an arcade also refers to a series of arches, a sequence of several arcades.
Until the end of the 18th century, this element was almost exclusively a formal detail of feudal construction. It was only thereafter that the arcade also found its way into folk architecture. The oldest known arcade house in Burgenland is the parish office of the Evangelical parish of Oberwart, built in 1784.
The arcade houses are typical for Oberwart. Especially in the older residential districts, these elongated houses with their characteristic building style can be found. In recent years, a return to this old Burgenland building tradition has led to the construction of many new buildings in this style and the revitalization of existing ones.
