Green Garden City in the South
Landau, the metropolis of the southern Palatinate, is primarily known as a fortress and university city. Due to its generous parks, it is also referred to as a Garden City. The State Garden Show 2015 further emphasized this nickname, as the approximately 15-hectare Südpark was newly established on land previously used by the French military. This continued a tradition that began in 1949 with the "Süwega." The Southwest German Garden Show or Southwest German Horticultural Exhibition is considered the first garden show with significant regional impact after World War II. New facilities were not only created at that time, but many were elaborately beautified.
So too is the Schillerpark, which stretches along the street "An 44". Here, impressive one-and-a-half to three-story villas and residential buildings with original wrought-iron fences in their front gardens align neatly. In this historic district featuring typical bourgeois houses from the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it's worthwhile to take a stroll through green Landau. Because here, the vibrant city center transitions seamlessly into an oasis of tranquility. The park, named in 1905 in honor and remembrance of the 100th anniversary of the death of Friedrich Schiller after the poet, is narrow yet covers about three hectares. It features a combination of baroque garden elements and the style of English landscape gardens.
The creation of the green spaces is also closely linked to the history of the fortress. It was established at the behest of the French "Sun King" Louis XIV (1638 to 1715). It was particularly important to him, as the city was ceded to France after the end of the War of the Palatine Succession in 1697. Landau thus became the easternmost outpost of his kingdom. In 1871, the dismantling of fortress structures began, on which green spaces were developed. These today form a green band around a large part of the city center. During walks through the green areas, structures and the geometry of the former fortress can still be observed. And: The Landau Zoo also invites visitors right in the immediate vicinity.
Speaking of the zoo: For those wishing to extend their walk, the path from Schillerpark past the Strieffler House and through allotment gardens towards the city village of Godramstein is recommended. Here, shaggy Highland cattle graze on the so-called riding meadows along the Queich. They help to control invasive plants such as the Indian balsam or giant knotweed. What was introduced as an ornamental plant in the 19th century has begun to spread rapidly. This displaced the native plants typical of moist floodplain and riverbank areas. So during the walk, one can experience live how four-legged landscape caretakers contribute to keeping Landau a green garden city.
