Palatinate Forest Trail—Wild Valleys, Ancient Castles, Forests, and Tranquility
The Palatinate Forest Trail stretches approximately 130 kilometers through the Palatinate Forest Biosphere Reserve, Germany’s largest contiguous forest area. Spanning eight stages, this certified hiking trail connects tranquil forests, striking red sandstone cliffs, and numerous cultural and historical sights. From Schopp, the route leads through the wild and romantic Karlstal Gorge, past the Johanniskreuz, and over scenic ridges all the way to the Dahner Felsenland. Highlights include the castles of Gräfenstein, Alt-Dahn, Drachenfels, and Berwartstein, as well as lookout points such as the Luitpold Tower and the Winschertfelsen. Time and again, traditional Palatinate Forest huts invite hikers to stop for a break—a hiking culture that has since been recognized as an intangible UNESCO cultural heritage.
