Am Nordwestrand des Stadtgebietes von Markdorf mündet bei der Ruine Altschloss ein kleiner, von Wirmetsweiler kommender Tobel, der an seinen steilen Wänden Profile aus dem Tertiär entblößt.

Im unteren Teil des Altschloßtobels hat sich der Bach tief in die weichen Sandsteine der Oberen Süßwassermolasse eingekerbt. Bis über zehn Meter hohe Wände zeigen unten grauen und glimmerreichen, oben gelblichen Sandstein mit harten, laibförmigen Linsen und konglomeratischen Einschaltungen. Stellenweise ist der Sandstein durch Eisenoxide rostbraun gefärbt und enthält Kohleschmitzen.
