Der Hohenasperg war ein keltischer Fürstensitz.

Inmitten der Landschaft erhebt sich der Hohenasperg, der als Zeugenberg seine Umgebung um ca. 100 m überragt. Dieses Gebiet war seit der Jungsteinzeit ( 5500 - 3400 v.Chr.) ein gern aufgesuchtes und intensiv bewirtschaftetes Siedlungsland. Die archäologischen Reste der weiter zurückliegenden Zeiten sind heute weitgehend zerstört.

Um 500 v. Chr. war der Hohenasperg keltischer Fürstensitzmit einer bedeutenden stadtähnlichen Ansiedlung. Vergleiche mit anderen Machtzentren dieser Zeit, wie zum Beispielder Heuneburg im Kreis Sigmaringen oder dem Mont Lassoisin Burgund, stützen diese Annahme. Diese Höhenbefestigungen beherrschten das Umland mit seinen ländlichen Siedlungen. Zu diesen Dörfern gehörten Hügelgräberfriedhöfe, von denen zahlreiche bis heute erhalten blieben.

Die Verstorbenen der Oberschicht erhielten hingegen Monumentalgrabhügel. Bemerkenswerterweise sind zahlreiche keltische Grabstätten in der näheren Umgebung so ausgerichtet, dass sie freie Sicht auf den Hohenasperg bieten, beispielsweise das große Hügelgrab bei Hochdorf oder die Grabstätte an der Katharinenlinde bei Schwieberdingen. Einen ganz besonders guten Blick auf den Hohenasperg bietet das am südlichen Rand von Asperg liegende Kleinaspergle.
