We hike up the Hohenasperg, a prominent viewing hill rising between Markgröningen and Ludwigsburg. It has a turbulent history and was already inhabited during Celtic times. In the Middle Ages, a castle was built on top, which was soon fortified and has been used as a prison for several centuries. We pass through Asperg and by a Celtic burial mound, then through the Leudelsbach valley and over the Hummelberg back.
Our hike begins at the Tammer See parking lot northeast of Markgröningen. We cross Tammer Straße (K 1617) and go left on the field path alongside the street following the Andelbach. Earlier, the Tammer See was located here in the triangle between the Andelbach and Leudelsbach, but nothing is visible today. After 150 m, we turn right and follow the field path straight for the next 1.2 km alongside the Andelbach. Where the fields end to the right before a line of trees, we turn right within sight of the distinctive water tower and after about 200 m, at the next junction, we find the red cross marking. This marking leads us left on an asphalt road past the water tower, over fields with allotment gardens and vineyards. After 1 km, we reach the first houses of Asperg and come to Obere Hurststraße and cross street L 1110. We now follow Schubartstraße and the signposting to Hohenasperg.
