Pôvodný vodný hrad mal na ochranu pred tureckými nájazdmi vybudované opevnenie tvorené obranným múrom so štyrmi vežami a vodnou priekopou. Pivnice kaštieľa súžili ako väzenie a počas Rákocziho povstania zas na razenie mincí (1704). Od roku 1690 až do doby postavenia dreveného artikulárneho kostola, slúžil hrad aj na vykonávanie evanjelických služieb božích.
Momentálne je Vodný hrad v súkromnom vlastníctve a verejnosti nie je prístupný. Noví majitelia, ktorí hrad kúpili od pamiatkového úradu ako ruinu, ho opravujú.
