Kedysi významné gemerské sídlo dokáže aj dnes očariť svojou historickou zástavbou. Dôležitosť Štítnika dokazujú aj zvyšky vodného hradu nachádzajúceho sa neďaleko centra obce.
Aj keď sa hrad spomína už v 13. storočí, povolenia na stavbu dostali Bubekovci v roku 1432. V období stredoveku plnil hrad funkciu sídla pánov zo Štítnika. Svojím umiestnením bol v minulosti chránený veľkými močariskami. Jeho stavbári využili vyvýšené miesto pri blízkej riečke, ktorá vodou zaplavovala vodnú priekopu.
V roku 1559 bol Štítnický vodný hrad zaradený do systému protitureckých pevností a tejto úlohe bola prispôsobená ďalšia prestavba hradu, doplnená zosilnením vonkajších múrov a vybudovaním delostreleckých bášt. Aj keď sa o hrad viedli ťažké boje s Osmanmi, počas ktorých menil niekoľkokrát majiteľa, poslednú ranu mu zasadili stavovské povstania, v ktorých bol hrad zničený a zostala z neho len ruina.
