Over time, the role of Špilberk changed. The stronghold, where the Moravian margraves first dwelt, became the cruelest prison of the Austrian monarchy. In the last forty years, Špilberk has been the seat of the Brno City Museum. The museum takes care of historical finds and works of art - all this can be seen in the permanent exhibitions devoted to the history of Brno and Špilberk, as well as to the development of fine art in Brno. In addition, the museum also organizes temporary exhibitions.
Visitors can also visit the observation tower with a magnificent view of the city, casemates with dark dungeons, torture chamber and crap or cells of well-known prisoners - Italian patriot and poet Silvio Pellico, Baron Trenck or robin Babinsky.
Špilberk Castle also hosts many cultural events, including the following: Špilberk lives, theater festivals String for the Castle or Summer Shakespeare Festival, Gastronomy Day Špilberk Food Festival, Špilberk Summer Cinema, Ibérica or Špilberk International Music Festival - classical music concerts.
