Ferenc Széchényi, the founder of the Hungarian National Museum and father of István Széchenyi, was born in 1754 in the castle. The Széchényi family moved here in 1682, but the building had already been inhabited since 1594. Archbishop György Széchényi acquired the estate as a pledge from Pál Esterházy, the prince of Nadar, and handed it over to his nephew György Széchényi, the castle captain. The castle was the residence of the family for one and a half centuries. The complete reconstruction was completed in 2020. In 2024, the castle and its surroundings were renovated. The Peisonia Visitor Center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of the Fertő Valley, is also located here.
