Knight Bossel vom Stein built the castle in 1285. It passed into the possession of the Counts of Veldenz and, in the middle of the 15th century, into the hands of the Dukes of Palatinate-Zweibrücken, where it served as the seat of the bailiff. Louis I was known as “Louis the Black” because of his dark hair and skin. When he died, he left the castle to his two sons, but they only ruled together for a year. Alexander forcibly deposed his older brother and imprisoned him in the castle’s dungeon. He remained a prisoner there until his death. During the Thirty Years’ War, the castle was partially destroyed by fire, and after the turmoil of the French Revolution and the reorganisation of the Rhineland, it became state property. The Cetto family from St Wendel acquired the rest of the castle in 1804 and used it as a quarry. Today, after several years of reinforcement and renovation work, Nohfelden Castle is a cultural and historical monument of importance in and beyond Saarland and an asset to the entire region. A lift takes visitors up to the lookout tower, from where they can enjoy a magnificent panoramic view over Sankt Wendel County and the Nahe valley. The castle is also a very special venue for events. It is ideal for private parties as well as annual festivities such as the popular medieval market.
