Touristik & Freizeit Sankt Wendeler Land
You don’t need bear strength for this route, although some bigger and smaller climbs await the hiker. The path leads through the diverse forest landscape, many small ravines and viewpoints of the Hochwald foreland, and opens up historically and scenically remarkable places.
The circular route leads over varied paths through a challenging hilly landscape. Many small ravines and viewpoints, connected with shady spruce and mixed forests, but also mighty individual trees, make the path especially attractive. The bear has left its traces in the naming. Today one still speaks of the "Bear Valley," the "Bear Cave" and the "Bear Rock." Throughout the route, history has left its mark. Numerous historic boundary stones are passed, the "Messerbrunnen," a spring sanctuary from Celtic times, the "Thick Oak," with a circumference of 4.20 m, burial mounds, and a disused sand as well as a quarry.
The name "Bear Path" results from the historical use of the Rosenwald as a hunting ground for the lords, who were for centuries the dukes of Palatinate-Zweibrücken.

Roadbook
From the parking lot at the town hall, the route initially follows a short section along the Freisbach and crosses a small bridge to go steeply uphill on a path between houses at the edge of Nohfelden, then a short downhill stretch to cooling spruce forests. The ascent to the Bear Rock then continues steeply uphill and past the rock massif of the "Bear Cave" on steps. Once at the top, the steepest climb of this route has already been mastered. From a resting place, you can enjoy a beautiful view of the Hochwald. It is then only a few steps to the rock summit of the "Bear Rock".
After a short descent, the path initially leads over forest roads and then turns onto a narrow path into a small valley. The forest becomes more diverse and is dominated by oaks. We follow the ravine, which soon opens into a small gorge crossed by a stream. Afterwards, you reach the forest edge with a view of the Nahe floodplain and continue walking along the forest edge. The path then leads back into the forest and crosses a picturesque alder swamp on a path. The path now takes us along romantic trails through very diverse forests. Wooden footbridges guide us over forest streams.
After about half of the hiking route, you enter meadows and open fields for the first time. But soon you turn again onto a forest path, on which after a short distance you reach the resting place at the natural monument "Thick Oak". The mighty tree has a trunk circumference of more than 4 meters and is probably around 600 years old. From here, a short detour to the nearby "Messerbrunnen" (follow the sign) is also worthwhile; this is a Gallo-Roman spring sanctuary. Based on coin finds ranging from before 100 AD to modern times, the special cultic significance of this place has been proven.
Historically remarkable is also the following section of the route. On the "Heidesköpfchen" there are Celtic burial mounds. In the 19th century, grave goods were excavated here, which can now be seen in the local history museum in Birkenfeld. The burial mounds are still clearly visible in the forest today. Through meadows and fields, the path climbs continuously and then reaches a country road. At a resting place, you can enjoy a wonderful view of the village of Wolfersweiler. Here the path turns and continues to climb, passing through two disused quarries. After a longer ascent, the resting place at the second quarry is just right to gather new strength for the last third of the route. This initially still ascending path leads further up to the Hommerich hill. Soon the highest point is reached and from then on you walk downhill on paths and forest roads, heading back towards Nohfelden. Through a ravine, the path gets steeper going down. At the end, the path crosses a forest stream again to reach a beautiful viewpoint on a clearing. From here, there is a short descent down to Nohfelden and back to the starting point of the hike.
