Kremnický hrad vznikol prestavbou staršieho chrámu na ochranu zlatých baní. Neskôr sa stal sídlom komorského grófa a dnes patrí k najnavštevovanejším pamiatkam mesta.

Kremnický hrad vznikol po roku 1328 ako pevnosť chrániaca miestne zlaté bane. Vybudovali ho prestavbou farského chrámu z 13. storočia, ktorý čoskoro obohnali oválnym opevnením s rozmermi približne 70 × 55 metrov. Vďaka rozvoju baníctva a rastúcemu významu mincovne sa hradný areál v 14. storočí rozrástol a doplnil o dvojité opevnenie i viaceré hospodárske budovy. Dominantou komplexu sa stal farský kostol sv. Kataríny. Hrad istý čas slúžil aj ako sídlo komorského grófa, významného kráľovského úradníka, ktorý riadil baníctvo, mincovníctvo a výber daní na rozsiahlej časti územia. S históriou Kremnice sa spája aj povesť o jarabici, ktorá náhodne objavila zlaté zrná a priviedla pána hradu k nálezu bohatých ložísk rúd. Dnes je hradný komplex jednou z hlavných atrakcií mesta. Čiastočne zrekonštruované objekty slúžia ako múzeum venované baníctvu a mincovníctvu, pričom kostol je stále aktívnym sakrálnym miestom.

Na hrad sa dá dostať pešo z centra Kremnice. Trasa vedie cez historickú časť mesta, ktorá návštevníkom poskytuje jedinečný zážitok. Hradný areál je otvorený počas celého roka. Otváracie hodiny sú uvedené na webe múzea (www.muzeumkremnica.sk).
