Fejérkő, avagy Fehérkő, esetleg Sámson várának maradványai Sámsonháza falu felett találhatók. Maga a vár még a középkorban elpusztult, 1409-ben már csak a helyét említik a fennmaradt források, de már csak a kilátásokért is érdemes felkapaszkodni.
A Sámsonháza határában magasodó Várhegyet nem véletlenül nevezik így: a tetején áll Fejérkő vára, ahová a KL jelzést követve kapaszkodhatunk fel. Sajnos a több mint 600 éve pusztuló erősség csekély falmaradványait a növényzet is kezdi teljesen elfedni, de a vadregényes környezetben szinte „elvesző” romokat a felfedező kedvű túrázók biztosan érdekesnek fogják tartani.

A panoráma

A meredek hegytetőn fák által szorongatott vár romjaitól csak korlátozott kilátás nyílik, de egy jelzetlen ösvényen átkaptathatunk a szomszédos, a falu fölé közvetlenül magasodó, fátlan csúcsra, ahonnan már kiváló panorámában lehet részünk elsősorban déli és nyugati irányban. Ugyanezt az ösvényt követve kényelmes ereszkedéssel térhetünk vissza a falu határába, a túránk kiindulópontját jelentő földtani alapszelvényhez.

Utunk során ne feledjük, a környék értékei természetvédelmi oltalom alatt állnak. Ne térjünk le az ösvényekről és ne bontsuk meg a látványos sziklafalakat!

A táj fölött fehérlő kövek

Fejérkő várának történetéről igencsak keveset tudunk. A helyi hagyomány szerint a település II. Béla király alatt élt, Sámson nevű főúré volt, innen ered a hegy lábánál fekvő település neve is. A feljegyzések szerint Sámson 1132-ben Borisz trónkövetelő híve volt (Borisz Könyves Kálmán el nem ismert fia volt.) A 15. század elején már csak várhelyként említik Fejérkőt, a nevét pedig azért kapta, mert a környező vulkáni vonulatokban igencsak ritka a fehér építőkő.

A két alkalommal végzett feltárás szerint a Várhegyen már Fejérkő várának építése előtt is állt egy egyszerű, fából készült erődítés, melynek előkerült egy cölöpszerkezetű védőfalrészlete is. Egy vesszőfonatos, agyagtapasztásos épület omladéka és alapfalmaradványa is felszínre került. Renoválási vagy állagmegóvási munkálatok nem történtek, a csekély falmaradványok lassú pusztulásra vannak ítélve.

  • A Sámsonháza, Fő út buszmegállótól északnyugati irányban a K jelzésen induljunk el, majd a jobbra leágazó KL jelzésen hagyjuk el a falut, és kaptatunk fel a Vár-hegy tetejére (1,33 km, 102 m szintemelkedés).

Parking

  • Az országút mellett található  Várhegyi-kőfejtő parkolójában érdemes letenni az autót. Innen a falu felé kell pár lépést sétálni, hogy elérjük a Vár-hegyre vezető KL jelzést.
