Germany's mightiest spruce is located in the Schramberg-Tennenbronn district.
The spruce has been classified and protected as a natural monument since 12 December 1950. Since 2008, it can be described as the thickest spruce in Germany, even though it must be assumed that the tree does not have a single trunk or core. The tree is twigged several times from a height of around two metres, which means that it has probably formed several trunks due to the former browsing of grazing or wild animals.
The spruce has developed well with a good water supply and is deeply branched. Throughout its life, the willow spruce stands at an altitude of 891 metres above sea level in the "wind cape" area and is therefore exposed to extreme weather conditions.
The tree measures 6.30 metres in circumference at a height of one metre and around 6 metres at a height of 1.30 metres. The thickest spruce in Germany known to date is in the Taunus mountains and has a circumference of 5.50 metres, although it is proven to be a single tree trunk.
The spruce in Tennenbronn is also one of the oldest and most special trees in Germany. It bears witness to around 200 to 280 years of history. The willow spruce in Tennenbronn stands in a special location in the border region between Baden and Württemberg and in the area of the main European watershed and proves that extreme and adverse conditions can harden the tree and thus make a longer life possible.
The willow spruce is located directly on the road between Langenschiltach and Hornberg-Reichenbach in the Windkapf area.
