A Vértes szigetszerű, külön világ, ami befelé vonzza a látogatót. Kívülről zord, sziklás, száraznak látszó, alacsony hegyvidék – szinte már a Földközi-tenger partjának szikár növényzetét idézi – a patakvölgyekben befelé haladva egyre üdébb. A területen a sportvadászat jelentős szerepet kap. Ami végigkíséri az utunkat, az nem más, mint a vad jelenléte, erős szaga, rágásának, taposásának nyomai mindenütt.
A Magyarországon csak itt előforduló keleti gyertyán termőhelyét a Haraszt-hegyi tanösvény is érinti. A csákberényi erdőszéli parkoló cserjéi tövig rágott hajtásokkal, bonszaiként fogadják az erre járót. Elindulva az ösvényeken, a molyhos tölgyes kökényből, galagonyából álló cserjeszintje megrágott falként szegélyezi az utat. Az erdők belseje szinte üres, lágyszárú aljnövényzet alig fedi a talajt. Ha felkapaszkodunk a mély völgyekből a hegytetők sziklagyepjeihez, a lábunk alatt pereg a talaj, és visszatekintve egészen a patakig lelátni a cserjék hiánya miatt. Muflonokkal könnyű találkozni; amikor éppen nem sikerül megpillantani a nyájat, akkor is hallani, ahogy a patáik csattognak a köveken. Az erdő már csak azért sem tűnik idősnek, mert a molyhos tölgyek, virágos kőrisek ritkán érnek el jelentős méreteket. Gyakran sarjaztatták őket a múltban, és a sarj eredetű fákra különösen jellemző a csenevész, görbe, alacsony termet. Sok holtfa található a hegyoldalakon.
A Juhdöglő-völgy erdőrezervátumában üdébb viszonyok uralkodnak, hatalmas bükkfák alkotják az erdő vázát, de az aljnövényzet itt is komoly vadhatás nyomati mutatja.

- A Csákberény, Hősök tere buszmegállótól a Hösök teréről északi irányba kell elindulni, majd a Z+ jelzésen kell balra kell fordulni. A jelzés kivezet a településről, majd közvetlenül az öreg erdőhöz navigál (3,3 km, 105 m szintemelkedés).
