A Keleti-Mátra gerincének több pontján szép idős erdőket találunk. A töredékek közül a 734 m magas Cserepes-tető nyugatra néző oldalát borító vegyes erdő érdemel említést – ahol az apró vadonban felhalmozódott fekvő és álló holt faanyag valósággal a romantika korabeli festmények tájrészleteit idézi. Alighanem a Mátra ősi képét láthatjuk itt, néhány kertnyi kiterjedésben.
A Mátra keleti részének legmagasabb régiójában, a Markazi-kapu és a Cserepes-tető között mintegy 100 hektárnyi, 140-200 éves fák uralta erdőrészletek egymással részben érintkező csoportjait találjuk. A Natura 2000 hálózatba tartozó, állami tulajdonú erdők nagyobb része fokozottan védett, a többi védett. Faanyagtermelést nem szolgáló üzemmódba az erdőknek kisebb része tartozik – a Sas-kő környékéhez hasonlóan itt is bőséggel akadnak vágásos és átmeneti üzemmódú részletek. Az erdők az Országos Erdőállomány Adattár alapján főként bükkösök és gyertyános–kocsánytalan tölgyesek.

A Kékes felől érkezve a gerincet követő útvonal sok szép idős erdőfoltot keresztez, de Cserepes-tetőhöz érve egyre-másra kerülnek elő az apró tisztások, hatalmas facsonkok és a minden részletében összetett szerkezetű, tölgyek uralta öreg erdő. A Cserepes-tetői Szentélyerdő az öreg erdőkhöz kötődő bogarak kiváló lelőhelye, ami általában jó indikátora az erdő magas természetességi állapotának.

  • Kékestetőn a buszmegállóból kövessük a P jelzést, majd a csúcson térjünk jobbra a K jelzésre. Ez vezet a Cserepes-tető oldalába, a Szentélyerdőbe, ahol a fokozott védettség miatt a jelzést tilos elhagyni (7,6 km, 190 m szintemelkedés).
  • Domoszlón sétáljunk nyugat felé a Kossuth Lajos úton, majd az első sarkon forduljunk jobbra a P jelzésre. Ez vezet föl a gerincre, ahol térjünk balra a K jelzésre. Ez vezet a Cserepes-tető oldalába, a Szentélyerdőbe, ahol a fokozott védettség miatt a jelzést tilos elhagyni (9 km, 558 m szintemelkedés).
  • Parádfürdőről a P jelzést kövessük a gerincre, ahol térjünk jobbra a K jelzésre. Ez vezet a Cserepes-tető oldalába, a Szentélyerdőbe, ahol a fokozott védettség miatt a jelzést tilos elhagyni (8,6 km, 587 m szintemelkedés).

Parking

  • Kékestetőn az adótorony közvetlen közelében lévő fizetős parkolóban hagyhatjuk az autót.
  • Domoszlón a Petőfi Sándor utca végén parkolhatunk (a falu szélén).
  • Parádfürdőn a Rákóczi-fánál érdemes parkolni.
