A Farkas-erdő e részét régóta Avasnak hívják, de hazánk egész területén előfordul az elnevezés. A szónak több jelentése van, egyrészt az „ó” melléknévből képezve idős erdőt takar, másrészt „óvott”, tehát nem irtható erdőfoltot jelent. Utóbbi gyakran összefüggött azzal, hogy a tölgy- és bükkerdőkben sertések makkoltatása zajlott, így a községek állattenyésztésében is fontos szerepe volt az erdők fennmaradásának.
