St George's Church and St George's Tower

Protestant parish church (simultaneous church from 1684 to 1958)

The three bays of the choir in the east of the building are the remains of a late Gothic church, which was built between 1468 and 1475 on the site of an older church destroyed in 1460 by the turmoil of war.
The St George's Tower was built on the west side to complete this church building. Construction began in 1501 and it was consecrated on 23 April, the feast day of the church's patron saint, in 1519. It is known that Friedrich Hammer, a member of an important Alsatian stonemason family, worked on the tower's construction. According to more recent research, the plan is said to have been drawn up by a Heidelberg master builder who is referred to as the ‘Master of the Augustinian Cloister’. A ‘Master Jörg’ is also mentioned on various occasions as the master builder and stonemason for the tower construction.
As the nave of the church had become dilapidated, it was demolished in the early 19th century and rebuilt between 1836 and 1840 according to plans by the royal Bavarian civil building inspector at the district government in Speyer, August von Voit. The construction work was carried out by the master bricklayer Franz Michael Riedinger from Kandel.
