Die heutige St. Georgskirche aus dem Jahr 1950 steht an der Stelle der ehemaligen St. Georgs-Basilika, die 1118 Graf Gerhard III. gestiftet und von Bischof Otbert aus Lüttich geweiht wurde. Während des II. Weltkrieges wurde die Basilika vollständig zerstört. Einige Schätze der alten Kirche sind noch vorhanden, u. a. die Rokoko-Kanzel (1782), eine Anna Selbdritt-Skulptur (ca. 1470) und ein Kopfnischengrab mit Gebeinen des Stifters. Vor der Kirche sind noch einige alte Grabsteine zu sehen, die den ehemaligen katholischen Kirchhof erkennen lassen.
Der neben der Kirche liegende Stiftsplatz erinnert daran, dass die Errichtung der St. Georgs-Basilika eine Stiftung des Grafen war, welcher diese Kirche mit zusätzlichen Schenkungen bedachte. Der Platz wird an einer Seite begrenzt durch den Immunitätsbogen, der die mittelalterliche die Grenze zwischen weltlichem und geistlichem Recht markierte.
