The Birgel Primeval Forest is the highlight of one of the tours in the Lower Rhine Water Hiking World. Here you will find pristine nature in a beautiful wetland area with moors and riparian forests. Other highlights of this tour, besides the Birgel Pützchen pilgrimage chapel, include Wassenberg Castle at the beginning or end of the circular hike.
In Wassenberg, we walk from the car park via Burgplatz and the roundabout into Burgstraße and finally into Loher Weg, along the forest edge, and at the car park into the forest (A1). Over a forest path that initially ascends uphill, we soon reach Birgeler Pützchen, a 18th-century Marian pilgrimage chapel with the Willibrord spring, located at a rest area. Now we take the left forest path, a Way of the Cross with various saint figures, until at the next junction, where there is also a bench, we turn right. At the next fork, we follow the Water Hiking World marking (W) to the right until an open area, where we keep left and finally pass a small cemetery with a parking lot. We reach a crossing road and continue straight ahead, crossing the Birgel brook. We veer left onto the next crossing street towards the sports facilities, which we leave to the left.
