Former chapel of the Franciscan monastery.
First mentioned in 1475, the chapel was part of a small Franciscan monastery before the Thirty Years' War and served as a branch church to the village church for centuries. When the new large town church was built in the immediate vicinity of St Sixt's in 1894, the chapel became private property and was converted for residential purposes. In 1965, frescoes were discovered in the former altar and choir room, which had been used as a cellar and chicken coop. The interior of the chapel was restored in 1973. Visits and guided tours are possible for larger groups by prior arrangement.
The chapel bears witness to Hausach's monastic past. The former monastery grounds of the monks of St Georgen extended right up to the gates of our town. The halls of the straw hat factory were later built on the neighbouring site of the chapel of St. Sixt, where many Hausach women were employed in the production of hats and carnival hats. There were flexible working hours and homeworking without this being enshrined in law.
The history of the monastery is not completely clear as far as the beginnings of the settlement by monks are concerned. The first customer of the monastery dates back to around 1445, when the chapel of St Sixt was built next to the monastery, which served as a church for the monks. The later, larger monastery church did not have a good start, as it only survived the Thirty Years' War as a ruin.
Later developments were also changeable, as there was no longer any need for the St Sixt building after the construction of the town church in 1896. For years, it housed the AOK office. For the people of Hausach, however, the building with the newly restored chapel always had a special significance. Thanks to the initiatives of the Historical Society, many volunteers, not just the Catholic ones, took care of the chapel, looked after its preservation and cleared out the small chapel room. This had once served as a cellar. During the restoration work, valuable frescoes were discovered - some of the oldest in the region. The Hausach associations donated the bell tower and every year the bell rings for the association's patron saint's day, which is traditionally celebrated in St Sixt.
