Preparing for Your Visit
Sturdy shoes and warm clothing are recommended. The summertime temperature is generally below freezing. At the cave entrance, visitors are equipped with mine lamps. Once inside the cave, magnesium lamps provide effective illumination of the icy sculptures. The cave itself is a protected natural monument, and may only be entered when accompanied by an authorized guide.
Physical Requirements:
Visitors to the cave have to twice negotiate 700 steps. This roughly equates to walking the stairs of a big high-rise building. It is for each person to decide, whether or not they are up to the physical demands. But let there be no doubt, the beauty of the ice formations and the imposing dimensions of the cave are ample reward for all your effort! The precise speed of the tour is going to be tailored to the nature of each group of visitors. Nevertheless, we do advise those with major mobility issues or cardiovascular problems not to visit the cave.
Directions:
6 km-long mountain road from Werfen, about a 20-minute walk from the car park to the station for the cable car. Transportation is available from Werfen to the parking area for public buses. Bikers are recommended to leave their bike at the stop where they board the bus (large parking area).
Opening times
Cave and Lift Calendar: Daily from 1 May until 26 October. Hours: 9 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. (last tour) or 4:30 p.m. (last tour in July and August). Length of the tour: about 70 minutes. Visitors should plan on this visit taking about 3 to 4 hours.
