The Cave of St. Ivan Rilski is a sacred hermitage site near the Rila Monastery associated with Bulgaria’s most important saint, St. Ivan of Rila. Traditionally believed to be his place of retreat, it is an active pilgrimage site where visitors perform small rituals and prayers. The cave remains one of the most spiritually significant locations in the Rila region.
The Cave of St. Ivan Rilski is closely linked to St. Ivan of Rila (876–946 AD), regarded as the founder of Bulgarian monastic tradition and the patron saint of Bulgaria. According to tradition, after experiencing a divine vision in which he was instructed to live in isolation, he withdrew to the Rila Mountains and lived as a hermit in this cave. From here, he became known for his ascetic life, healing abilities, and spiritual guidance, attracting followers and establishing the foundations for what later became the Rila Monastery tradition.

Today, the cave is a pilgrimage destination where visitors continue devotional practices associated with the saint. A narrow passage inside the cave is traditionally believed to be passable only by those of pure heart, and pilgrims often leave written wishes at the entrance or perform rituals at a nearby spring. The site is deeply embedded in local religious folklore, reflecting St. Ivan’s role as a symbol of purity, asceticism, and spiritual protection. While many associated legends have developed over time, the cave remains an important living religious site within Bulgarian Orthodox tradition.
