Die Burg oberhalb des Ortes entstand zwischen 1140 und 1160 und wird in den mittelalterlichen Urkunden als „Wolfsperch“ genannt. Außerhalb der Burg entstand eine Siedlung, die nach und nach so groß wurde, dass sie Ende des 13. Jahrhunderts als Stadt im vollen Rechtssinne aufstieg. Das ist das heutige Wolfsberg!
