Die Burg oberhalb des Ortes entstand zwischen 1140 und 1160 und wird in den mittelalterlichen Urkunden als „Wolfsperch“ genannt. Außerhalb der Burg entstand eine Siedlung, die nach und nach so groß wurde, dass sie Ende des 13. Jahrhunderts als Stadt im vollen Rechtssinne aufstieg. Das ist das heutige Wolfsberg!
Im 16. Jahrhundert wurde die Burg von italienischen Baumeistern als Festung umgebaut, um sie vor den herannahenden Türkeneinfällen zu sichern.
Die Anlage war bis ins 18. Jahrhundert Residenz des Vizedoms. Der Vizedom vertrat den Bischof bei lokalen herrschaftlichen Angelegenheiten.
Auch die Burg Wolfsberg kam im 19. Jahrhundert in den Besitz von Graf Hugo Henckel von Donnersmarck. Die Festung war für ihn besonders attraktiv, da es hier große Vorkommen an Holz und Wasserkraft gab. Diese konnte er für den Betrieb seiner Eisenwerke gut nutzen.
Der Graf lies die Burg durch die Wiener Architekten Romano und August Schwendenwein im Tudorstil umbauen und reich ausstatten. So sollte der Stil der englischen Spätgotik imitiert werden.
