The Sisi Castle Unterwittelsbach, actually the moated castle Unterwittelsbach near Aichach, is an idyllic Renaissance building.
Between 1838 and 1888, it belonged to Duke Max in Bavaria (known as "Zither-Maxl"), who used it as a charming summer residence - his daughter Elisabeth, who later became Empress of Austria (Sisi), also lived here for a time as a child.
Today, the palace - lovingly renovated since its acquisition by the town of Aichach in 1999 - houses a Sisi Museum. In the permanent exhibition "Life, Death & Myth", seven multimedia rooms tell the story of Sisi's girlish everyday life in the palace, her cult of beauty, her escape into noble travels and her tragic death.
