Kühbach, Oberwittelsbach, and Unterwittelsbach
Only a few wall remains are left of the former Wittelsbach Castle in Oberwittelsbach. It is the ancestral seat of the Wittelsbachs, who ruled Bavaria for over 700 years. In 1083, Count Otto III of Scheyern acquired the castle and expanded it. From the new seat, the Counts of Scheyern called themselves from 1105 "Counts Palatine of Wittelsbach." In 1209, as punishment after the king's murder in Bamberg, in which the Staufer Philip of Swabia was murdered by the last Count Palatine Otto VIII, the castle was released as a quarry, and the Wittelsbachs moved away. On the remains of the former keep, the late Gothic castle church was built, and a pilgrimage to Mary has been documented since 1418. In Unterwittelsbach stands the Sisi Castle, a water castle that Sisi's father, Duke Max in Bavaria, acquired in 1838 to pursue his great hobby, hunting, in the acorn-rich and thus game-rich forests of the Paar valley. Here, the later Empress of Austria spent a carefree part of her childhood, including pony riding in the castle park.
We start at the parking lot (information boards) of Kühbach Castle, 457 m, which was first built as a Benedictine nunnery in 1011 and acquired by Duke Max in 1839. Since 1862 it has belonged to the barons von Beck-Peccoz, who built a respected estate that is still in operation today. The monastery brewery, documented since the 16th century, is also continued as a regionally oriented brewery. Slightly offset to the left, we follow Wöresbacher Straße to the edge of town. Looking back, we see Inchenhofen, the Paar valley, and the radio tower near Schönbach. Via a bridge over the B 300, we walk straight into the forest and along the gravel road through the monastery woods. At the highest point, we pass a wooden signpost straight ahead. Downhill, ignoring all side paths, we reach the forest edge where we keep half-right. We see the parking lot at the Wöresbach homestead but immediately turn right, 482 m. Shortly along the forest edge and back into the forest, we always follow the marked
