Errichtet wurde die Burg im 11. Jahrhundert vom berühmten Herzogsgeschlecht der Zähringer, den Vorfahren der heutigen Markgrafen von Baden – sie weist also ein stolzes Alter von fast 1000 Jahren auf. Der Name der Burg leitet sich von „Stauf“ ab, was im Althochdeutschen einen „kegelförmigen Berg“ bezeichnet. Eine treffende Beschreibung des über 380 m hohen Staufenbergs.
