Its construction is attributed to the Duke of Lorraine around the middle of the 12th century to protect the Abbey of Sturzelbronn. In 1297, the Counts of Bitche, guardians of the Lorraine border, received the castle as their property. It became a sub-fief of the Fleckenstein family in 1363 and then passed into the hands of Wirich von Hohenbourg in 1450. In 1570, the castle was occupied by the troops of the Duke of Lorraine. The site was abandoned in 1606. Some believe that Lutzelhardt was already in ruins, possibly having been destroyed during the Peasants’ War in 1525. Others argue that the castle was destroyed during the Thirty Years’ War... Today, remnants of the square-shaped keep, several living quarters, wells, and a cistern remain...
Directions: From Obersteinbach, take the D 3 toward Sturzelbronn to the parking lot at the Lutzelhardt Forest House. From there, follow the trail marked with a yellow rectangle (GR 532) on foot. Allow 20 minutes to walk to the castle.
