Obersteinbach - Lützelhardt ruin and Rumberg-Steig
Günther Weinert
The first destination of the Wasgau circuit is the Alsace castle Lützelhardt. Although it has been heavily damaged, it still fascinates visitors after centuries. The steep ascent to the plateau offers you a magnificent panoramic view of untouched nature dominated only by forests and mountains. The second scenic highlight are the five distinctive rocks Ostfels, Lochfels, Wespenfels, Habichtsfels, and Kastenfels, which lie on the elongated ridge of the Rumberg and are on the German side. Also there are the rock formations "Spitzer Fels" and "Rumbergfelsen." The return path then leads back through lonely forests – unfortunately also on somewhat neglected trails – to the starting point. Here, the GPX file loaded onto your smartphone could be a good help. It would be nice if the forestry office on the German side could improve the trail conditions up to the border – with minimal resources.
Note: You can extend the route at the German-French border by hiking east – along the border – to the viewpoint rock "Bavarian Windstein".

Roadbook
First hike with the "red lozenge on a white background" (Palatinate Forest; Zabernweg) to the Lützelhardt ruin. After climbing/visiting the ruin, from which you have a magnificent view of the Palatinate Forest and the Vosges, continue east. At the first intersection, turn left. Shortly afterwards you will reach the German-French border. From there, continue straight ahead along the hiking trail (blue-white bar), which passes the rescue point 6911-482.
After 1.6 km you will reach the Rumberg-Steig, which you should follow. Attention! Turn right! Experience interesting rock formations along wonderful paths as you continue. In the area of a large turning place, leave the Rumbach-Steig to the right and hike southwest (paved road). On the way, you will pass the rescue point 6912-603. Now orient yourself using your Outdooractive map. The path leading you past a swamp area to the German-French border is somewhat neglected and without trail signs.
Shortly after the border, you will meet the "red lozenge" again, which will take you past the Lützelhardt ruin back to the starting point.
Alternative route: You can also start the route in Obersteinbach and include the viewpoint rock "Bavarian Windstein" in the circular hike (see sketch in the photo series). Here is the link to the approx. 14 km long route:
