On beautiful weekends, you are unlikely to find any solitude on the paths around the castle ruins on the German-French border. There is a reason for this, of course: the region is one of the most spectacular far and wide. By contrast, things are much quieter south of Obersteinbach, and for good reason: neither the rock castles there nor the deep forests need to hide from the more famous sites on the border. So it's worth exploring further south from the village of Obersteinbach, which is popular with hikers!
From the parking lot opposite the Hôtel Anthon in Obersteinbach, walk 300 m east on the main road (Rue Principale) to the Arnsbourg bus stop, where you will find several signposts and markings. There we follow the red rectangle to the right, i.e. to the south. We leave the Rue Principale and walk briefly on an asphalt road (Rue de la Glockengrube), then turn left. The first 20 minutes are only slightly uphill through park-like terrain, later through forest, until we reach the southern edge of the surprisingly extensive valley basin of Obersteinbach. There, keeping more to the right, we climb a little steeper on a nice slope path to a forest road and on it in a few steps to the right to the Col du Wittschloessel, 368 m.Here we turn left again onto a slope path, whereby we should not be tempted by the sparse, inaccessible remains of the Wittschloessel (not very rewarding) when the path splits.
