Im Mittelalter bestand die Bevölkerung Wolfsbergs aus Bauern, Handwerkern, Kaufleuten, Geistlichen und Adeligen, die ihre Häuser innerhalb der Stadtmauern hatten.
Einige Adelsfamilien wohnten jedoch nicht direkt in der Stadt, sondern in sogenannten „Freihäusern“. Sie waren daher gegenüber der Stadtverwaltung nicht abgabepflichtig. So zum Beispiel die Herren von Himmelberg, die im Paurischen Haus wohnten, oder die Kollnitzer. Die Kollnitzer, eines der mächtigsten Adelsgeschlechter des Tales, hatten auch ein Stadthaus. Heute befindet sich in diesem Haus das Bezirksgericht. Das daneben gelegene Kollnitzer-Stöckl gehört auch zum Komplex dazu. Hier sehen Sie direkt über der Eingangstür das Wappen der Familie
