The Trieste Karst is an area that offers a lot in terms of landscape, natural history, and history. A rocky, rugged plateau whose vegetation, wildlife, and inhabitants have had to adapt. Especially appealing is the view from the edge of the karst plateau over the Gulf of Trieste, which offers beautiful sights and views. Further inside the karst, fertile red soils, small villages, and oak forests characterize the landscape.

Undisputed main protagonist in this area with its eventful history is the Isonzo. In its upper course on Slovenian territory, probably the most beautiful river in Europe, it has special historical significance here in the area around Gradisca. It tells of a glorious past, but unfortunately also of a world war that has left indelible marks. The rugged yet charming karst landscape dominates the entire route until it steeply descends to the sea at Duino.

I was very wary about this stage after reading earlier comments. I got in trouble right after crossing the Isonzo. I went around in circles but finally found the "uphill in the forrest". Next.. There was no sign at the path intersection at the top. I lucked out by going left (but there was no "76" in sight). Next trouble area... After San Martino del Carso I was very happy to get on CAI 72 but shortly noticed an Alpe-Adria sign taking me off in another direction to the left. I recommend staying on CAI 72 here because even the A-A directions mention getting back on CAI 72 down the hill some ways. Other than that I liked this historical stage a lot. A lot of good info all around concerning the Battles of Isonzo. Also the first glimpses of the Adriatic are very welcome.
