The Trieste Karst is an area that offers a lot in terms of landscape, natural history, and history. A rocky, rugged plateau whose vegetation, wildlife, and inhabitants have had to adapt. Especially appealing is the view from the edge of the karst plateau over the Gulf of Trieste, which offers beautiful sights and views. Further inside the karst, fertile red soils, small villages, and oak forests characterize the landscape.

The cliffs of Duino – a nature reserve that includes steep walls at the edge of the karst plateau and the sea in front of it – form an ideal setting for Duino Castle. The predominant rock here, both on the surface and underground, is limestone. The reason the landscape here is called karst is due to the thousands of caves of various sizes that have formed in the limestone. The typical karst "Terra Rossa" (soil of bright red color, formed by the leaching of limestone) allows the cultivation of particularly full-bodied, salty-mineral wines like Terrano. Good refreshment options for hikers are offered by local restaurants, agritourism farms, and the simple taverns called "Osmizze." The karst vegetation, which can offer nature enthusiasts surprising and amazing things at any time of year, especially gifts magical moments in autumn with its brilliant colors.

    Author’s recommendation

In the appropriate season, numerous "Osmizze" open their doors: these taverns (local wine, homemade products) have limited opening hours.

In the immediate vicinity of Duino Castle, we take the path named after Rilke: the poet wrote his Duino Elegies here during one of his stays at the castle. The Rilke path, which runs high along the cliff coast, offers beautiful views of the Gulf of Trieste. We pass the village of Sistiana, which lies on the state road SS14. We continue towards Visogliano and cross the highway overpass. Immediately after, we keep right and reach a gravel track in the direction of Slivia (trail marking CAI 33) via side roads. Visogliano, protected on the right by a small doline, is one of the oldest prehistoric sites in Europe. Through the forest, we reach the village of Slivia and then head towards San Pelagio (CAI 32). We cross wooded sections and pass pastures bounded by characteristic dry stone walls skillfully built from rough karst stone. On this stage, a small detour to the ancient Castelliere is worthwhile: this is one of the many pre-Roman hill settlements in the province formerly inhabited by the warlike Istrians. From San Pelagio, the path continues to TernovaPiccola (CAI 10). From there we enter the deciduous forest (CAI 3), ascend towards Monte San Leonardo, and then descend again to Samatorza (CAI 45).

We pass the little church of Samatorza and reach Sales (SP18). Shortly after the village, we take the mule track to the Colludrozza pond. Heading south, we pass through Colludrozza (refreshment option) and reach the town of Sgonico via the SP14 provincial road. Following the route of the provincial road SP7, we pass the entrance to the botanical garden "Carsiana" and arrive at Gabrovizza. Keeping the southwesterly direction, we turn right into the lanes of the village, cross the highway, and continue on an asphalted section that leads at Campo Sacro to the provincial road SP1. As soon as possible, we take a gravel track into wooded terrain and keep the direction until we reach trail marking No. 1, which leads us to the village of Prosecco.

There is no place to sleep in Prosecco. You can stay in Opicina or in Triest.
