Kythnos is one of the nearest islands of the Cyclades, in relation to Athens. It is located immediately after the island of Kea, and before the island of Serifos. It is a small island, with a maximum diameter of about 20km. The top of the island is Kakovolo, at 365m. The routes of the hiking network of the island follow the geomorphology mentioned above, i.e. they are short routes without large altitude differences. For the most part they are relatively easy and friendly for any type of hiker, some even for children. Almost all of the routes include one of the two largest settlements of the island, Chora (also known as Mesaria), and Dryopida.
The routes are mostly linear, however there is overlap between some paths, which gives hikers additional freedom of combination.
