Erbaut wurde die Hütte bereits 1906, auch auf Betreiben und mit Unterstützung von Theodor Christomannus, bekannter Förderer des alpinen Tourismus an der Wende vom 19. zum 20. Jhdt. Ein weiterer großzügiger Förderer war der Industrielle Karl Ostertag-Siegle, der mit einem substantiellen finanziellen Beitrag den Bau erst ermöglicht hatte. Der erste Name der Berghütte lautetet denn auch Ostertaghütte.
Heute ist die Rotwandhütte wegen der leichten Erreichbarkeit ein beliebtes Ziel für Wanderer und ein ideale Stütz- und Ausgangspunkt für Kletterer oder Alpinisten auf mehrtägigen Touren durch die Dolomiten.

Die Rotwandhütte ist geöffnet von Juni bis Oktober.
