Die Hütte liegt in einer Hochgebirgslandschaft, in einem engen Seitental des obersten Murtals am Fuße der abweisenden Nordwand des Hafners (3.076m), der zu den östlichsten Dreitausendern der Alpen gehört. Durch die Steilheit der Hänge und der damit verbundenen Lawinen- und Steinschlaggefahr wird die Waldgrenze natürlich niedrig gehalten.
In den 1950er Jahren wurde der Untere Rotgüldensee zwecks Energiegewinnung aufgestaut. Die ÖAV-Sektion Graz pachtete 1959 eine Baubaracke der Salzburger Elektrizitätsgesellschaft und adaptierte sie als Schutzhütte. Bei der späteren Erhöhung des Staudammes wurde 1994-95 die neue Hütte in attraktiver Lage am See errichtet, Eröffnungsfeier 17.09.1995.
Im Jahr 2025 wurde die Hütte mit dem Umweltgütesiegel für Alpenvereinshütten ausgezeichnet.
