The hut is located in a high-mountain landscape, in a narrow side valley of the upper Murtal at the foot of the forbidding north face of the Hafner (3,076 m), one of the easternmost three-thousand-meter peaks in the Alps. Due to the steepness of the slopes and the associated risk of avalanches and rockfalls, the tree line is naturally kept low.
In the 1950s, the Lower Rotgüldensee was dammed for power generation. In 1959, the Graz section of the Austrian Alpine Club (ÖAV) leased a construction barrack from the Salzburg Electricity Company and converted it into a mountain hut. When the dam was later raised in 1994–95, the new hut was built in a scenic location by the lake; the opening ceremony took place on September 17, 1995.
In 2025, the hut was awarded the environmental seal of quality for Alpine Club huts.
