In the no man's land between Schleißheim, Eching, and GarchingThe Heidepfad is a nature trail equipped with well-made information boards but not marked on site, which leads through three nature reserves and to several attractions. It begins at the abandoned village of Mallertshofen, a former small village that existed from the Middle Ages until its final demolition in 1879, leaving only the St. Martin church preserved today. Afterwards, the route leads through the quiet forest and heath areas of the Mallertshofer Holz before arriving back in the present at the Echinger See and the A9 motorway. Other highlights include the Echinger Lohe and the Garchinger Heide, two interesting remnants of the former coppice forest and heath zone that shaped this area. While just before you could watch the restless noise and rushing on one of Europe's main traffic arteries from the motorway bridge, you now find yourself amidst dreamy meadows where ridge fields and Bronze Age burial mounds transport visitors to a distant past. An impressive tour, where the seclusion and magic of the old heath landscape can still be felt and history comes alive.

Short circular tour through two remarkable nature reserves This varied round features two scenic gems of the northern Munich gravel plain: the Echinger Lohe – a primeval oak-hornbeam forest and one of the few preserved sections of the former Lohwald belt in northern Munich – and the Garchinger Heide, whose flower meadows can be explored on a path exclusively open to pedestrians. Both are designated as nature reserves and are therefore under strict protection. In addition, the peculiar barren expanses of the landscape captivate the hiker: to the south the Alpine range, to the north the Tertiary hill country, and in between the flat, seemingly endless stony fields amid which we make our rounds here.
