Meandering River Landscape Between the Baltic Sea and BoddenThe Prerowstrom originally separated the Darß from Zingst until the river mouth was filled in 1876, turning the island of Zingst into a peninsula. The pleasant hike leads directly along the shore of the sea arm, with the return route along the white Baltic Sea beach.

At first, the view sweeps across the Bodden and the bird island of Kirr all the way to Barth on the mainland. Later, we venture into the Osterwald, marvel at a group of mighty prehistoric sequoias, and finally reach the Zingst pier on the Baltic Sea beach.> We start at the Bodden harbor in Zingst 01, where we can grab a fish sandwich if we need a snack, and then hike along the dike path toward “Pramort.” The vast bird sanctuary island of Große Kirr, located just off the harbor, immediately makes an impression. As the ruins visible from afar show, it is largely abandoned and subject to strict nature conservation regulations. Among the more than 60 bird species that breed on the island are the rare dunlin and ruff. On the opposite shore of the Bodden, the imposing church of Barth dominates the scenery. The best way to view it is through the photo frame by the path—an art project. At the fork in the road here, we turn right. Soon, the tour reaches the Müggenburg 02 ferry landing near a shelter, where there’s a particularly good view across the Zingster Strom to the bird island. Incidentally, the ferry is primarily used to transport the herd of cattle that grazes on the Große Kirr during the summer. We now leave the bike path and follow the narrow road past the few houses in Müggenburg to the country road. Here, the route turns left and then, after just 50 meters, turns right. The concrete-slab path leads us past a horse stud and straight into the forest, where the hike follows the signposted left turn (“Zingst/Strand”). The tour soon enters the national park and thus the Zingst Osterwald. We stay on the concrete-slab path the entire time, hiking through the dense and unspoiled greenery, and only 0.5 km before the beach do we take a short detour to the primeval sequoias 03 on the right. These trees have already reached an impressive height. Back on the paved path, we soon reach the edge of the forest and head to the beach 04, which beckons us to take a refreshing dip in the Baltic Sea. The route now follows the coastline to the Zingst pier 05. If the weather is clear, you can even see the Dornbusch, one of Hiddensee’s central islets. At the pier, the local diving gondola and a wide variety of places to stop for refreshments invite you to linger. Through the pedestrian zone in the center of Zingst and along Hafenstraße, we finally return to the starting point 01.
