In the very south of Switzerland lies the canton of Ticino, which is popular with hikers. The region is Italian in both language and culture. So it comes as no surprise that it is here, near Chiasso to be precise, that Switzerland's lowest point is to be found. Ticino also has the lowest point in Switzerland: This is directly on Lake Maggiore, the northern part of which still belongs to Switzerland and which is also the starting point for excursions and hikes in the surrounding region.
