The cradle of the Norwegian environmental movementThe Eikesdalen (Oak Valley) cuts through the mountain giants rising up to 1800 m high, which tower on both sides of the elongated Eikesdalsvatnet. The valley is named after its species-rich deciduous forests. The road leads closely along the rock walls to the Aursjøvegen, one of the most spectacular mountain passes in western Norway. On the west shore of Eikesdalsvatnet, the Mardalen branches off with the widely visible Mardalsfossen, one of the highest waterfalls in Norway. Until the 1970s, up to 40 m³/s of water plunged into the depths. Since the construction of the Grytten power plant (located south of Åndalsnes), this natural spectacle belongs to the past. The fight to preserve this natural wonder became famous in 1970 through the Mørdala campaign, when the philosopher Arne Næss and hundreds of supporters laid siege to the construction roads in the mountains (some chained themselves). These peaceful protests laid one of the foundations of the Norwegian environmental movement. The power plant was built, the once mighty waterfall lost its livelihood, and now only a maximum of 3 m³/s of water falls into the Mardalen between June 20 and August 20. A detour to this highlight during this time is definitely worth it.

Heading towards the fjord view on Sherpa stairsThe pastor's son Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, poet of the Norwegian national anthem and the first Scandinavian Nobel laureate in literature (1903), came to the parsonage Nesset prestegard as a five-year-old and got to know rural life, which he later described in his novellas. The new path to Prestaksla was built by Sherpas and equipped with nice rest and picnic areas. Along the path are signs with quotes from the poet.

Until the road was built in 1990, people had to cross Lake Eikesdalsvatnet by ferry to reach the end of the valley near the village of Eikesdal. The decommissioned ferries can be viewed on the lake’s southern shore. Today, you can easily reach Eikesdal by road and from there take the toll road to Mardalen. That’s where the hike to Mardalsfossen begins; with a drop of 655 meters, it is Norway’s second-highest waterfall. The upper, 297-meter-high, vertical drop is particularly impressive. The water of the Mardødal River collects in high-altitude lake basins. The largest lake is Mardalstjønna, situated at an elevation of 945 m. It is interesting to note that the water from the waterfall is primarily used for power generation. In 1975, the so-called Grytten power plant began operations. This plant utilizes the water from Mardalsfossen. From June 20 through August 20, however, the gates are opened for tourists, ensuring a minimum flow rate of 2.5 m³/s. Previously, flow rates of up to 45 m³/s were recorded.> From the large parking lot in 01Mardalen, we hike a few meters back along the access road and then leave it straight ahead before the bridge. The hiking trail leads through the deeply incised valley with its steep, sometimes highly exposed slopes. Thanks to the unique microclimate, plant species typical of moist ravine forests, broadleaf forests, and alpine habitats have been able to thrive here. To the left of the trail, you can hear the rushing of the river. Past a picnic area with numerous benches, we then cross 02 Mardødal. The trail now climbs a bit more steeply to a beautiful 03 viewpoint from which you can see the Mardalsfossen waterfall. After a short stretch back on the main trail, we take the 04 path branching off to the right at the next opportunity. It also leads through the forest and ends at a 05 road that crosses our path. We turn left and head downhill on this road. Where the trail ends, we turn left onto the access road and continue to the large parking lot in 01 Mardalen.

Schon bald blickt man tief ins Tal hinunter.
