The 10 most beautiful hikes in Lungau
Hike to the source of the Mur
The Mur is Austria's second longest river and has its source in the Hohe Tauern, more precisely in the Ankogel group. In the Muhr, as the Lungau valley is called, which stretches along the upper reaches of the Mur, there are many charming hikes around the Sticklerhütte, but also into the unspoilt side valleys.
The hike to the Murtörl, where the Mur rises, is a marvellous tour that reveals the charms of this region like few others. The start is at the Sticklerhütte, from where it climbs around 900 metres in altitude. The length of the hike should not be underestimated: there are almost 20 kilometres to cover there and back.

Hiking on the Katschberg Pass
The Katschberg Pass or Katschberghöhe (1641 m) is one of the tourist centres of the Lungau region and is popular with active holidaymakers in both summer and winter. In summer, the high starting point is ideal for hiking to the surrounding peaks of the Nockberge mountains. Thanks to the small differences in altitude, it is also possible for families who love hiking to enjoy the view from a summit. If you want to start your hike from high up, you can also take advantage of the cable cars on the Katschberg and be transported up to almost 2000 metres above sea level. Possible summit destinations on the Katschberg Pass are the Aineck and the Teuerlnock.
To the Twenger Almsee on the Radstädter Tauern
The Radstädter Tauern Pass marks the border between Pongau and Lungau. In winter, the Obertauern ski area is very busy here. In summer it is much quieter. The terrain around the pass offers many wonderful hikes, some are quite easy and also recommended for families, while those to the summits are quite challenging and rewarding destinations for experienced mountain hikers.
An enjoyable and scenically beautiful hike leads to the Twenger Almsee, for many one of the most beautiful hikes in Lungau and the whole of Salzburg. The approximately 10-kilometre hike also offers a refreshment stop at the Twenger Alm, which is known above all for its delicious homemade cakes.
What is the name of the highest mountain in Lungau?
The summit cross of the Großer Hafner (3076 m) rises on the border between Carinthia and Lungau. It is also the easternmost three-thousand metre peak in the Alps and a lonely and challenging mountain tour. The Großer Hafner is therefore the highest mountain in Salzburger Lungau.
