This hearty high mountain tour requires quite a bit of stamina, as it goes uphill quite briskly twice. However, the view of the surrounding mountain ranges quickly makes you forget the effort. Along the forest road, a forest educational trail created by schoolchildren provides a welcome change, and the many lupines along the way delight with their colorful display. A mighty cross and an altar at the Granitzl hut indicate that mountain masses are regularly celebrated here.
From the barrier at the parking lot north of the village Kraischaberg, 1390 m, it first goes about 2 km quite comfortably on a red-white marked forest road No. 763 valley-inward to the Ehrenreichmarterl. Here begins the steep pull path through the forest to the Granitzl hut, 1820 m. To the right past the hut, the trail leads through a long, flowery and almost flat high valley with many small ponds, always keeping the mighty Zechnerkarspitze in sight. A final steep climb up to the ridge and – sometimes somewhat exposed – in a few minutes to the summit cross of the Zechnerkarspitze, 2452 m. Especially impressive is the view to the 2862 m high Hochgolling in the northeast. Deep down to the west is the Weißpriachtal, to the east the Lignitztal with the two large huts of the Lignitzalmen. The unmarked trail leading north from the summit to the Hundstein, about 150 m higher, is only recommended for experienced mountaineers. The descent is along the ascent route.
