Tips and suggestions
There is also a somewhat longer variant of this hike: For enduring mountain enthusiasts, the ascent from the Twenger Almsee to the impressive summit of the Großer Gurpitscheck (2,526 m) is a challenging addition to this route.
Tip: On the way back, you should interrupt your journey after 40.6 km to Radstadt and admire the impressive Johannis waterfall, which is only a 5-minute walk from the road.
Roadbook
From the parking lot behind the Schaidberg youth center (located to the left behind the first avalanche gallery towards Obertauern), you start on a wide but also steep forest road to the Twengeralm. The path leads through a stone pine forest up to the unmanaged Ernsthütte. After that, a significantly flatter path through open terrain takes you to the Twengeralm. From there, a narrow trail takes you through alpine rose slopes and meadows with arnica flowers and leads you to the beautifully located Twenger Almsee.
Tip: You can also use this breathtaking lake as a starting point for a summit hike. From the lake's outlet, a rising path takes you over a meadow slope within 20 minutes to a mountain ridge, from which you have a magnificent view of the Schönalm lakes in Lungau. After a further short walk, the Gollitschspitz (2,247 m) can be reached to the left. Those who are still not satisfied after this ascent can continue the hike to the Großer Gurpitschek (2,526 m). The path there takes you over the beautifully curved northern ridge to the summit. The way back is along the same route. By then, it's time for a well-deserved snack at the Twengeralm.
