Is it possible to hike on the Karwendel?

There are many hiking trails leading to the Westliche Karwendelspitze, especially from Mittenwald. To climb the peak, you should not only be in good shape and sure-footed, but also have experience in alpine terrain. The panorama from the Westliche Karwendelspitze to the Zugspitz region compensates for the strenuous, difficult ascent. If the hike is too challenging for you, you can take the Karwendel cable car to the Karwendelgrube and hike from there to the summit via the Pasamani circular trail.

Experience adventures with the Karwendelbahn in Alpenwelt Karwendelel

The valley station of the Karwendel cable car is located on the outskirts of Mittenwald, in Alpenwelt Karwendel. The gondola ride to the top station at 2,244 metres provides a unique view down into the Isar valley to Mittenwald, Krün and Wallgau as well as to the summit of the Zugspitze with the Wetterstein mountains, the Alpine foothills and small mountain lakes. Once at the top, numerous hiking trails and climbing routes await you. The Mittenwald via ferrata, which leads over eight two-thousand-metre peaks, is sensational. At the mountain station you will find a mountain restaurant with a sun terrace, where you can even get married. In addition, Germany's highest nature information centre, the "Bergwelt Karwendel", is located here.

Which mountains belong to the Karwendel?

The four mountain groups that make up the Karwendel are the Northern Karwendel Group, the Hinterautal-Vomper Range (also known as the Karwendel Main Range), the Gleirsch-Halltal Range and the Inntal Range. The Karwendel boasts 125 peaks above 2,000m, and there are a large number of lower mountains in this part of the Alps that you can also hike.

The four best starting points for hikes in the Karwendel are Hinterriß in the north, the Achensee in the east, the Inntal in the south and Scharnitz in the west. From Hinterriß, you can reach the Laliderwände and the Ahornboden, at the Achensee you can hike to the Mondscheinspitze or the Hochplatte, from the Inntal you can go to the Wolfsklamm and the Halltal and from Scharnitz you can reach the Isarursprung and the Gleirschklamm. In the varied Karwendel, there is the ideal tour for every hiker, whether high up or short hikes in the valleys, for which you don't need too much fitness and some of which are also barrier-free.

Active all year round in the Alps in Karwendel

The Karwendel not only invites you to go hiking in summer, winter hikes have also been very popular here for years. The trails are prepared and lead through the idyllic winter landscape. Some of the winter hiking trails require more physical fitness than in summer, and good shoes are a must. However, the fantastic atmosphere in the snow-covered Alps more than makes up for it. In addition to short hikes in the snow, you can also go on sporty tours. Many huts in the Karwendel are also open in winter for warming up and eating.

But it is not only winter hikes that are popular here. Cross-country skiing trails, ski tours and snowshoe hikes also attract enthusiastic outdoor sports enthusiasts every year in winter.

The most beautiful huts in the Karwendel

You can't get enough of hiking? Then you urgently need a boost in between. It's beautiful everywhere in the Karwendel Nature Park. In the region you will find rustic huts with delicious regional specialities between the lake and the summit. Take your time and explore the huts.

  • Lamsenjochhütte, 1,953 metres - several hiking tours lead to the hut at the foot of the Lamsenspitze mountain massif, you can also spend the night here.
