Did you know that for a long time the most dangerous pirates of the Adriatic wreaked havoc in the sea off Omis? Between the 13th and 15th centuries they attacked countless merchant ships. The classic in Omis - Hike to Starigrad Fortress
Besides the old pirate castle, the Starigard Fortress (Fortica) is one of the most popular sights in Omis. It was built in the 15th century by the Venetians for protection against the Ottoman Empire. The fortress towers 300 metres above the town and is an excellent destination for your hiking excursions.
If you want to hike to the fortress, you have two options, whereby the ascent on the sea side is somewhat easier. From the bridge on the Cetina, walk a few metres along the shore and then turn right. At the top of the old town, follow the path to the fortress. From the tower of the fortress you have a magnificent view over the entire coast and the hinterland with the peak of Sveti Jure (1,762 m). The steep descent to the north leads partly over scree fields and is therefore to be enjoyed with caution.
For those seeking adventure, a small via ferrata also leads up to the fortress. It is suitable for beginners, but a via ferrata set with helmet, sure-footedness and good physical condition are a must!
Hikes with dream views in Grad Omis
If you want to enjoy spectacular views in Omis, don't be afraid to hike a few metres uphill. The sight of the setting sun over the Adriatic Sea is particularly beautiful. To experience this impressive natural spectacle, in the late afternoon you should try a hike up Mount Kula (863 m), the highest peak in the area. On the almost ten-kilometre-long trek you won't find any too demanding hiking trails, so you will reach the summit quite quickly - provided you are fit enough, because there are 860 metres of altitude to climb.
A magnificent view of the Cetina breaking through the Mosor Mountains is promised by the St. Leopold Mandic nature trail. The trail starts at the car park at the hydroelectric power station in the small town of Zakucac. With a length of about 2 kilometres, this hike is quite short. However, as the hiking trails lead you up serpentines and through rocky terrain, you should be sure-footed for this short hike.
