Tip: the mountaineers' cemetery
The Johnsbach mountaineering cemetery is the largest mountaineering cemetery in Austria. It is located around the church of Johnsbach, from here you have a direct view of the Großer Ödstein. In 1885, the first mountain dead were buried alongside the locals, the most famous being the painter Gustav Jahn.
A total of 83 mountaineers who died in accidents have been buried here over the years, many more are commemorated by memorial plaques on the cemetery wall, and mountain rescuers have also found their final resting place here.
A place of peace and remembrance - and the starting point for many hikes.
