In Upper Swabia with the wide landscape, the paths are sometimes long.
Willow-meadow landscape The green willow-meadow landscape is a creation of the 19th century. Until then, the predominant color was blue, as the extensive cultivation of flax and hemp caused the flax blossom to color the fields blue. Linen was produced from flax, which the Ravensburg trading company sold through its widespread offices throughout Europe. The decline came from cheaper cotton from America and India, which was machine-woven from the end of the 18th century thanks to the invention of the steam engine. This made the elaborate and time-consuming hand weaving of the Allgäu farmers unable to compete. © Claus-Günter Frank

Dispersed settlements and scattered orchardsThe landscape through which this hike leads is a typical dispersed settlement area; the settlements are characterized by widely spaced hamlets and farms, surrounded by their meadows and fields. The green pasture-meadow landscape is a creation of the 19th century. Until then, the dominant color was blue, as the flax blossom from the extensive cultivation of flax and hemp colored the fields blue. Linen was produced from the flax, which the Ravensburg Trading Company sold through its widely spread offices across Europe. The decline came with the cheaper cotton from America and India, which was machine-woven from the end of the 18th century due to the invention of the steam engine. With this global competition and the new technology, the elaborate and time-consuming hand weaving of the Allgäu farmers could not compete.

From the source of the Riß, the hike goes up to the ridge located in the eastern direction. There we follow the edge of the forest. At km 4.4, the tour leads into the forest. After about 450 m, a path on the left leads to the Egidius Chapel. A few benches there invite you to rest. To get back on the route, we must return the detour to the chapel. The tour then continues through the Wilde Ried.

I'm not much of a hiker, but I'd like to complete the 1,000 km challenge on Outdooractive in 2023 (so far I've only ever managed around 500 km a year). I want to hike a total distance of 1,100 km, which is approximately from my hometown of Weiler to Cuxhafen. The idea is to slim down massively in the process. That would be my dream project for 2023.
